Gunnell was a graduate assistant for Boston College, his alma matter. In 2014, Gunnell coached at Marian High School, Framingham, Massachusetts. In 2016, Gunnell was named the Boston College wide receivers coach. After the dismissal of Steve Addazio, Gunnell was appointed interim head coach.

Gunnell signed with the Kansas City Chiefs on April 25, 2010. Gunnell was released by the Chiefs just before the start of the 2010 season, September 3. Gunnell was cut by the Chiefs, and was then placed on the practice squad.

Gunnell broke Pete Mitchell’s career record for receiving yards at Boston College. Gunnell broke the record with a 61-yard touchdown grab in the second quarter against USC in 2009’s Emerald Bowl. Mitchell’s 2,388 yards was his highest total of receiving yards. Gunnell had 130 receiving yards, one touchdown and six catches in his last game at collegiate. In the Atlantic Coast Conference, he was the active leader in receiving yards, catches, and punt return touchdowns.
